Kwinana Freeway Interchange and Extension Project

GHEMS' Role

This project was the first and largest of its kind in Perth. It incorporated the full project management package from design and implementation of works to final completion and hand over.

Being awarded this contract recognises GHEMS' ability to provide expert and innovative techniques for topsoil management.

The project site was dominated by areas of steep batters (approx. 35°) which required stabilisation and protection from erosion.

Project management incorporated:

• Design and supervision of surface soil and mulching treatments across the project site.
• Native seed recovery and supply
• Tube-stock supply and plant
• Environmental weed management
• Supervision of mulching, claying and final trimming
• Maintenance and erosion repair

Regular formal monitoring and maintenance of the project site over a three year period was also incorporated into the project scope.

Outcomes

Revegetation establishment with the aid of weed control has been strong and the project site fulfilled completion criteria with handover achieved in 2007.

Relevant Components

All aspects of this contract required the highest standards for site preparation (weed control, mulching and tree surgery), species selection, seed recovery for conservation of remnant vegetation and seed dormancy breaking procedures to achieve agreed standards for completion.
